XOR Gate - Conic Sections

Gerald Donald will be releasing a new album, Conic Sections, under the name XOR Gate on Tresor on 9th March. It will be an album composed of eight themes mixed as one 30 minute track. Back in 2016 he made four pieces of music for an art exhibition in Florida, USA, under this name. I imagine these will feature on the album. You can still listen to one of them on the gallery's website here

It's great to see Muller back on Tresor and a new project too. More details at Vinyl Factory and Resident Advisor. If you want to go deeper you can read all about the XOR Gate and the Conic Section at these links.

New Heinrich Mueller collaborative track, Dopplereffekt live dates and Drexciya tributes

There will be a new Heinrich Mueller (as Rudolf Klorzeiger) collaborative track on the upcoming album by The ExalticsDas Heise Experiment 2, on SolarOneMusic. You can listen to samples of all its tracks at this Clone link. The current date for release is 26th February.
The re-press of the Lab Rat XL album, Mice or Cyborg is now shipping from Bleep, Clone shop, Juno etc.
It's not everyday you discover a new Drexciya track! On the CD and cassette of Underground Resistance's Interstellar Fugitives (1998) there is one more track that even I was not aware of, 'Interstellar Crime Report'. 'Aquatacizem' is their other, better known, contribution to the triple vinyl version. You can listen to it here on YouTube. There is always something new to find out about Drexciya! I learned this thanks to longtime Drexciya fan Andrea Parker and her great EPM mix of 2014.
Dopplereffekt are included on a very impressive bill at the one day Inner City Electronic event in Leeds, England on 2nd June. They also have a shows scheduled for
Paris on 23rd February and 8th May in Lyon, France. In case I've missd one, you can always check out some of their upcoming shows here on Resident Advisor.

'The duo (Drexciya) would come into Buy-Rite, and Ingram played their records at gigs around the city. After they saw him perform as Urban Tribe at the first Detroit Electronic Music Festival, in 2000, Ingram got a call from the duo's James Stinson. "'Hey man, I want you to do some DJing. I want you to be an assault DJ for Drexciya, we're going on tour.'" I was like, 'Hell yeah.' So that's how that relationship started."'

This is a really interesting interview with DJ Stingray from 2017 about his early days DJing in a biker bar in Detroit, starting his Urban Tribe project and getting to know Drexciya and more.

In this great new video Helena Hauff includes one of Drexciya's real obscurities in her choice of B-Sides. She mentions them from 4min 25sec but the whole video is well worth watching, it made me want to start digging deep into my own vinyl collection again. She also briefly talks about James Stinson in this more spooky video from last year at 2min 45sec.

In this edition of Boiler Room Collections, Ed of DMX Krew picks Gerald Donald's Glass Domain 12" from 1991 as an early electro influence. At the 1hr 15min 36sec mark he explains how he found out about Drexciya and went to London's Fat Cat Record shop where he bumped into Mike Paradinas who made some recommendations and suggested this record. It's interesting to learn that right from their very first release Drexciya found an audience in the UK (and beyond) and that even Donald's first solo record was being imported into the UK. If you have the time the whole programme is well worth watching. If you don't already, you will love DMX Krew!

This is a special 313CTRO mix dedicated to the memory of James Stinson by DJ Psycho of Detroit Techno Militia from 2014.

Susana P. Correia R.I.P.

The death has occurred of Susana P. Correia of Zwischenwelt. While she died on the 4th October 2017, the news only reached the wider public in the last few days after fellow group members, Beta Evers, Penelope Martin and Heinrich Mueller, wrote online tributes to her. Initially when Zwischenwelt (which translates as in-between world) was launched on MySpace in 2007, Susana was the most mysterious and least known member of the group but in time she would become much better known to fans due to an interview she did with Derek Walmsley for The Wire's  'Adventures in Modern Music' show on Resonance FM in 2010. This rare appearance was to promote their debut album, Paranormale Aktivität, on Rephlex and is well worth listening to as she goes into great detail about the theme of the album and how their collaboration proceeded (including a full group get together in Germany in 2008). In 2016 Clone Aqualung reissued the album on vinyl for the first time and Susana was instrumental in making and appears in a new video for 'Clairvoyant' to promote it.

Susana accomplished many other things in her short life, she was also an acupuncturist and healer who had volunteered her time in Nepal. In the world of music she was known as a DJ and producer and in the past worked under the name Su:Real. In 2004 she released a track under this name which came out of a collaboration with Rob F. You can read her online obituary here. I found this beautiful image of her by Alexia Rodriguez that she called 'Between Dimensions' on her MySpace profile. Everything I've written about Zwischenwelt on DRL to date can be assessed here.

She will be very missed. My deepest condolences to her family and friends.

Heinrich Mueller remixes 6D22, TOPP reissue and more

There is a remix by Heinrich Mueller on a new EP, Dragon's Path, by 6D22 aka Italian producer Giorgio Luceri. His mix has a specially made video by the Berlin-based crew, the29nov films. It is available now to purchase and is distributed worldwide by Rubadub. You can download it as a file too from Bandcamp.

It looks like there is a new pressing of Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe by The Other People Place due on 16th Jan 2018. It was reissued by Warp on double vinyl for the first time since 2001 back in February of this year. This pressing sold out very fast with copies already going for €30 and more on Discogs. You can currently pre-order it from RedEye at this link.

Dopplereffekt will be playing live in London on 2nd February 2018.

I've uploaded a video for the audio of the talk about Drexciya that was part of The Ocean After Nature exhibition at Dublin's Hugh Lane Gallery. This happened on 25th November and was a conversation between myself and Richard Brophy (DJ Magazine/First Cut Records), who is one of the few journalists to have interviewed Drexciya twice. This was followed by a DJ set by Sharon Phelan and a live performance by Dopplereffekt.

The subject of the Zong Massacre, when 133 slaves were thrown overboard in 1781, and a painting that depicted this, The Slave Ship (1840) by J.M.W. Turner, came up during the talk on Drexciya at Dublin's Hugh Lane Gallery. This was in relation to Drexciya's origin mythology. This massacre is also referred to by The Otolith Group in their film, Hydra Decapita (2010), which has been screened as part of The Ocean After Nature at the same gallery and runs until 7th January 2018.

Part 2 of Jim McCormack's All Drexciya 2 hour mix is up now at this link

Lab Rat XL reissue on Clone Aqualung and more

Clone Aqualung will be reissuing Lab Rat XL's album, Mice Or Cyborg (2003). It will be available again on double vinyl in December. This was part of Drexciya's Storm Series and was last re-pressed in 2008 and on vinyl is currently selling for about €80. This is great news, hopefully the reissues will continue.

There is a new Dopplereffekt live date for Berlin on 11th November. They also have a new show confirmed for Barcelona, Spain on 18th November and in Athens, Greece on 10th November.

The US Hip-Hop group, Clipping.have made an amazing tribute to Drexciya and their mythology, 'The Deep'. The track was originally created for This American Life episode #623, 'We Are In The Future' about Afrofuturism, which was recently broadcast on US National Public Radio. The track can be downloaded and is set for a release on Sub Pop soon.

I've made this graphic to show how Drexciya's music spread from US to European labels. This is one of the many topics Richard Be and I will be talking about at the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin on 25th November. This event is part of The Ocean After Nature exhibition and is now sold out but details are here. Dopplereffekt play live as well! At the same venue on 12th October there will be a screening of Hydra Decapita (2010) by The Otolith Group. This will be followed by a discussion led by the artist Dennis McNulty.

The Black Atlantic, the oceanic site where the trans-Atlantic slave trade produced a black identity regarding an African diaspora, is central to all music, persona and production of the elusive Detroit techno producers Drexciya. This film scrutinises the subjects of slavery, global finance, capitalism and climate change.

This is a link to a video I've made of 3 radio interviews where I've isolated the part about Drexciya for your convenience and for archival purposes. The first section is very revealing and comes from an interview with Adult. by Bass Agenda from 2017, next is an interview with the curator of The Ocean After Nature, Alaina Claire Feldman and the last is from a show about Afrofuturism on This American Life episode #623. They all happen to be from an American perspective, hopefully I can compile more of these in the future.

Serge from Clone Records drops a secret here about Dopplereffekt that all "electro freaks" know anyway (from 8 mins). This is a brilliant show about Dutch Electro from 2003, which surprisingly comes from MTV, broadcasting from a parallel dimension or just Norway!

This is a link to a new Drexciya radio mix from France. There are also two mixes by Jim McCormack, both 2 hour long, of Drexciya. Part 1 and Part 2.

Dopplereffekt live in Dublin and more

To tie-in with Drexciya's inclusion in The Ocean After Nature exhibition at Dublin's Hugh Lane Gallery, Dopplereffekt will be playing a live performance there on Saturday 25th November. This very special and fully seated event begins with a talk about Drexciya by myself and Richard Brophy aka Richard Be (First Cut), one of the few journalists to have interviewed James Stinson twice. There will also be a performance by the artist and musician Sharon Phelan. You can see the very 2001: A Space Odyssey gallery performance space in image below. More details, including where to book tickets (be warned there is a limited capacity) are to be announced on Wed 10th October on the Facebook event link. Its been a long 9 years since Dopplereffekt have played in Dublin (although Arpanet did play there in 2013).

Dopplereffekt will be playing at this Afrofuturism event (9th-12th Nov) in Athens, Greece on a bill that includes Sun Ra Arkestra, Actress and A Guy Called Gerald and many more. Abdul Haqq, who did Drexciya's Neptune's Lair artwork, is also listed as a guest speaker. If you can get to this event, go.

Drexciya are the subject of this art/discussion/music event in Dortmund, Germany on 27th October. It looks like a really interesting programme and is part of a wider festival, Afro-Tech. More details below.

'The Afro-Tech exhibition contains numerous albums by Drexciya as well as two related art pieces. As part of the festival week, the Drexciya myth will come alive during a special club night: A live DJ set by Lamin Fofana will provide the soundtrack to a short film by Yvonne Wilhelm, in which the German media artist interweaves Drexciya's artistic narrative with her own mother's migrant history. The DJ and media scientist Dash a.k.a. Steffen Korthals revisits the story of the band by means of texts, images and live record samples in a lecture that widens the perspective to Detroit and the techno scene while charting the band's influence on other artists, past and present. His contribution will be followed by a conversation between Lamin Fofana and the performance artist Zen Jefferson about the importance of Drexciya for their own work...The events in the context of the Afro-Tech Fest will be held in English. Free admission to all events that are part of the Afro-Tech Fest!'

You can watch Dopplereffekt's entire recent performance at Boiler Room in Bogota, Colombia at this Facebook  link. You willhave to search for their video, which is excellent and the audio is pretty decent too, with loads of unreleased stuff. I'm not sure how long this video will stay up so grab it while you can. DJ Stingray played next and he opened with Drexciya's 'Cascading Celestial Giants' from Grava 4.

This is a very professional video of Dopplereffekt live at Scopitone in Nantes, France recently. Looking and sounding very good.

New Heinrich Mueller/Beta Evers track, live dates and tributes

'Innerhalb Der Zeit' is a new collaborative track from Heinrich Mueller and Beta Evers (Zwischenwelt/Gedankenexperiment). It is included on a split 12" between Beta Evers and Spatial Relation on the Peripheral Minimal label. You can listen and buy the download at this link. The vinyl is limited to 300 copies and is out now.
The track is pure ice! I found the following review of it, "The side ends with the even gloomier "Innerhalb Der Zeit", a beat-less piece of hazy and slightly disturbing music, featuring Heinrich Müller from Dopplereffekt and sang by Brigitte, completely in German."
"I wanted to create something that showed my massive love for their work," said the Dutch producer, real name Vincent Koreman. "I wanted to imagine what would happen after the underwater race would reconquer Earth." Drvg Cvltvre have an upcoming Drexciya inspired EP, details here.
Dopplereffekt will be making their live debut in South America on 28th September when they play Bogota, Colombia at Boiler Room. DJ Stingray is also on the bill too, details here
I think its been a good few years since Dopplerefekt have played in Norway. Norwegian fans will be happy to hear they are appearing at the Insomnia festival in Tromsø, which runs from 26th to 28th October.
Arpanet will playing live in London on 13th October. Support comes from Intergalactic Gary and the great Alex Downey. Looks like a good night.
If you are missing Zerkalo, Victoria Lukas now has a new project, SVYAZ, with Christoph De Babalon. There are two brilliant tracks to listen to at this link.
I was sent a link for a new James Stinson/Drexciya tribute page, made by an Italian fan, Andrea Benedetti. Check it out!

This is a recent tribute mix to James Stinson/Drexciya by Nitetrax to mark the 15th anniversary. Well worth a listen.

Radio Red in Puerto Rico have uploaded a new mix show with various tracks from Drexciya's Storm Series.

This DJ mix is from a few years ago, it's made up of just the The Other People Place album tracks. It was made by CPSmith, producer and label boss of Sheffield's Central Processing Unit label.
